Delay of Emmy Awards Reportedly Caused by Strikes

According to Variety, the Primetime Emmys will not be held on September 18th as originally planned. The ceremony has been postponed due to the ongoing strikes by writers and actors, which have halted all Hollywood productions and promotions. The TV Academy has not yet announced a new date for the event, but Fox, the broadcast partner, is reportedly considering January 2024. This year, HBO’s Succession has received the most nominations with 27, while The Last of Us has made history with an impressive 24 nominations for its video game adaptation.

Hollywood writers began striking in early May, while actors joined them earlier this month. AI is prominent in both cases: scribes and performers fear that producers will increasingly use AI-generated content to undermine people’s ability to make a living in the already brutal show business. Perhaps the most startling revelation was a report that studios offered a “groundbreaking AI proposal” to pay performers a day of work to use their digital likeness forever. As generative AI advances faster than most people could have imagined, it now threatens to destroy the careers of creators in Hollywood and beyond.

While The Last of Us was a milestone in game adaptations (including acting nominations for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey), the third season of Disney’s The Mandalorian received an impressive nine nominations. Meanwhile, Andor received eight nods — including Outstanding Drama Series. It follows the journey of spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), one of the fallen heroes of 2016’s Rogue One, to the rise of the Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan Kenobi, also on Disney+, received five other nominations, including Best Limited or Anthology Series.

In addition to The Last of Us In and Andor, Outstanding Drama Series also includes Better Call Saul, House of the Dragon, Succession, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets.

Apple TV+ also did well in the nomination with 52. Ted Lasso is nominated for Best Comedy Series among 21 nominations, which also include Best Actor in a Comedy Series starring Jason Sudeikis, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Hannah Waddingham and Best Sidekick. Actor in Phil Dunster’s comedy. Apple’s mesmerizing sci-fi adaptation Silo debuted too late for consideration this year, but don’t be shocked if it features prominently on the 2024 list.

Elsewhere, Amazon’s hugely ambitious The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power earned six nods (mostly in technical categories). Netflix’s Stranger Things received six, Peacock’s Poker Face four and Star Trek: Picard received two make-up nominations. HBO led all platforms with 127 nods, while Netflix led only streaming networks with 103, followed by Apple (52) and Amazon (46).
